The new Acadia has the same wheelbase as the Terrain, is only marginally longer, the third row seats are now optional, and has a base 4-pot and optional V6. Sooo.... Where does this leave the Terrain?

Kinja'd!!!

My only guess would be the Terrain will get downsized to fit more in line with the Escape and similar given it’s always been a ‘tweener between two segments. Interesting choice, GMC.

Hopefully dead. Or, small Jeep fighter to live up to it’s name.

New Acadia looks good tho.

I always liked the Acadia. Disappointed the redesign is a downsizing though.

Doesn’t matter. They’ll both still sell like hot cakes. The Acadia/Traverse/Enclave are by far the most popular vehicles I’ve seen from GM in a long time. Seriously. There’s more of them around here than Camries (Camrys?). And the Terrain/Equinox are in the same league. I see way more of those than any other similar sized or spec’ed crossovers.

On dealer lots, where they typically are?

In all seriousness, I think this move was more to free up space between the Yu/hoe and the Acadia with less concern for the Terrain. I see the Terrain going to a smaller chassis. I don’t know if the Cruze would be too small, but that’s more viable than the Theta platform that has been around for 13 years.

Wow. I really, really like the look of it.

Not as concerned about the size. If someone wants bigger, they’ve got the Yukon in 2 size offerings.

My ‘guess’ that Terrain gets smaller. Remember that the former Theta-Epsilon SRX went bigger to the C1UL platform, and is the XT5, right in the middle of the lineup. So I would hazzard a guess that GM will be expanding its crossover and SUV lineup with the use of D2UX, 9BUX and 9CUX platforms.

Which I genuinely don’t understand about the Terrain/Equinox given there’s SO MANY better options out there. Maybe because cheap and V6 and bigger than the similarly priced competition, that’s all I can think of.

The Terrain shrinking would only make the most logical sense. Probably be limited to a Turbo 4 instead of a V6 and a few other things to differ it from its slightly smaller big brother.

No way will GMC kill a car that sells as much as the Terrain does. They’re everywhere!

So, Look at current platforms used for SUV’s at GM, Gamma (Encore, Trax) Then the new Buick Envision is on Delta 2 Utility, which makes me think that the Equinox and Terrain will be on D2UX (maybe some other vehicles too) and then C1xx which launches with the XT5 and Acadia. I Imagine that GM will have an SUV from all of the brands on each of these platforms. There might also be a utility variant of a currently launching platform, but only time will tell.

No. Around here it is the “Buy ‘Murican, don’t buy no stupid Jap cars!” mentality.

I can dream. I really don’t like the Terrain and would like to see it become/be replaced by a Jeep fighter.

Normally the logic is “Company makes boring thing to support exciting thing to get people in to look at boring thing which supports...” but GMC has no real low-volume exciting sales dud in it’s range. Now I’m not saying that GMC isn’t allowed to make cars that sell because I don’t like them. What I’m saying is that since the Acadia is becoming smaller it could probably fill both holes, 7 seater and 5 seater (with WAAAAY more cargo space as a 5 seater), and free up the Terrain badge to be something nuts. Without losing revenue and probably gaining some.

Of course, this is all basically a pipe dream.

But imo, it looks more like a new generation Envoy...which I would be okay with!

This IS strange, the Acadia sold so well because it was the right size (bigger than a pilot/highlander smaller than a tahoe) so what now?

It’s exhausting here. Especially since the damn Toyota Camry (common “Jap car” around here) is built in Georgetown, Kentucky!

Apparently the Traverse is staying the size it currently is now, so buy a Traverse? This is a good size for the Acadia to go against the similarly configured Kia Sorento, which could be helpful.

Is guess not unless it's scaleable architecture. I'm not totally sure. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

The Traverse/Acadia/Enclave are pretty much all the oldest vehicles in their respective lineups. Can’t imagine they’re going to stick around in their current forms much longer. The Equinox/Terrain are the next-oldest models, so they’re probably not going to be around much longer either.

I think because GMC and Buick are pretty much joined at the hip now, maybe GM is consolidating the GMC/Buick crossover lineup.

2016 Acadia FWD: 200.8" long, 78.9" wide, 118.9" wheelbase, 4656 lbs

2017 Acadia FWD: 193.6" long, 75.4" wide, 112.5" wheelbase, 3956 lbs

Terrain FWD: 185.5" long, 72.8" wide, 112.5" wheelbase, 3904 lbs

Buick Envision: 183.7" long, 72.4" wide, 107.9" wheelbase, 4047 lbs

(I think the weight for the Envision is the AWD version? This press release where I found the specs doesn’t make it quite clear.)

So anyway, I dunno if GM is fully planning to abandon the “midsize+” segment the Traverse/Acadia/Enclave are in right now, but their newest crossovers are the Envision, Cadillac XT5, and Acadia. The Acadia & XT5 have the same 112.5" wheelbase. Take that for what you will.
